I do my best to keep these updated, but let me know if you found a contest you believe should live on this page. I try to avoid contests with overly pricy entry fees. Let me know if you end up winning something in a contest. I’d love to celebrate you in my blog.

MARCH 2024

Natan Notable Books Award: This free contest awards $5,000 and marketing support for a recently published nonfiction book concerning Jewish identity and Jewish life.

Jacklyn Potter Young Poets Competition: This free poetry contest for high school students allows up to five submissions of any style of poetry.

A Public Space Writing Fellowship: Unpublished writers are able to enter this free writing contest with a $1,000 prize as well as publication in A Public Space magazine.

Ann Petry Award: Previously unpublished African American writers can submit their work for potential publication by Red Hen Press and a $300 prize.

L. Ron Hubbard’s Writer’s of the Future Contest: This contest accepts prose up to 17,000 words. Winners will receive a $1000/$750/$500 prize.

Parsec Short Story Contest: Writers who enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and overall speculative narratives might enjoy entering this contest. Winners receive $200/$100/$50.

Sarah Mook Poetry Prize for Students: This poetry contest is for K-12 students and awards $100/$50/$25 to the winners.

Substack’s Monthly Short Story Contest: This monthly contest awards $100 for short stories ranging from 6-1000 words.

Robinson Jeffers Tor House Foundation Poetry Contest: A prize of $1,000 is awarded to winners. Up to three poems may be submitted for a $10 submission fee.

Raz-Shumaker Book Prize: Submit a short story collection of 150 words or more or a poetry manuscript of 50 pages. A prize of $3,000 is awarded to the winner as well as publication through University of Nebraska Press. A $25 entry fee is required.

Frost Farm Metrical Poetry Contest: A prize of $1,000 and a conference scholarship is provided to the winner of this contest metrical poetry contest. The entry fee is $6.

Terry Tempest Williams Creative Nonfiction Prize: This creative nonfiction essay contest offers an award of $1,000 and publication in North American Review. There is a $23 entry fee.

Prime Number Magazine Award: Two prizes of $1,000 will be awarded for a short story and/or poem. Winning entries will also be published in the Prime Number Magazine. There is a $15 entry fee.

APRIL 2024

Maya Angelou Book Award: Kansas City Public Library will present a $10,000 award to the author of a book that demonstrates a commitment to social justice. This is a free contest.

Sixfold Poetry and Short Story Award: Two $1,000 prizes for a short story or group of poems will be awarded. An entry fee of $5 is required.

Gemini Short Story Magazine: Submit a short story of any length along with an $8 entry fee to potentially win $1,000 and publication in Gemini Magazine.

Terry Tempest Williams Creative Nonfiction Essay: This contest offers an award of $1,000 and publication in North American Review. They accept creative nonfiction essays of 5,000- 10,000 words for an entry fee of $23.

Wergle Flomp Humor Poetry Contest: This free annual contest from Winning Writers offers a prize of $2,000 and $500 for second place. Poems can be up to 250 lines.

Omnidawn Publishing Single Poem Contest: Submit a poem of 12-24 lines for a chance to win $1,000. The entry fee is $12

Florida Review Editor’s Prize: Three $1,000 prizes will be awarded in annually for a poem or grouping of poems. There is a $25 submission fee.

New Ohio Review Literary Prize: Submit a poem, essay, or short story for a chance to win one of three prizes of $1,500 and publication in New Ohio Review. There is a $22 entry fee.

Pen Parentis Writing Fellowship for New Parents: An award of $2,000, a mentorship, and publication in Dreamers Creative Writing Magazine will be awarded to a parent of at least one child under 10 years old. The entry fee is $20.

F(r)iction Short Story Contest: Twice a year a $1,000 prize is awarded for a quality short story of 1,001-7,500 words. There is a $15 submission fee.

Tadpole Press 100-Word Writing Contest: A bi-annual prize of $2,000 for a 10–word poem or flash fiction. There is an entry fee of $15.

March Hawk Press Poetry Contest: Poets are invited to submit their work along wit a $25 entry fee. Winners are awarded $1,000 and publication in March Hawk Press.
